Receiving A Stress Relief Massage

When receiving a massage from someone else, make sure you feel totally comfortable with the person and with the situation. Often a relative or partner is the best person to ask for a massage as you will be able to relax more completely.

However if you want to have a more professional massage, ask friends for recommendations or ask at your local health centre if they have any registered or trusted massage therapists. Often there are local alternative therapy clinics which have regular masseurs on their list. Often these clinics will have aromatherapy massages available and these are extremely relaxing and stress busting.

When receiving a massage make sure the room is warm and comfortable and that you are wearing clothing that can be easily removed and are loose fitting, that way you can easily slip out of them.

It is likely that during the massage you will be partly covered with a towel and that you will be lying down. Try to relax in this situation even though it is not an everyday experience, the more you can relax the more benefit you will take from the massage.

Self Stress Relief Massage

Of course there will be times when you do not have time for a full back massage or indeed have the money to spend on a session. Luckily there are a few self massage techniques which you can carry out on yourself when you feel your body tensing and the stress building.

To Relieve Shoulder Tension

  1. Find yourself a small hard ball, like a tennis ball or even an apple (this is not good for the apple though)
  2. Stand with your back to a wall and your feet hip distance apart.
  3. Squat down Place the ball behind your back to one side of your spine
  4. Now stand up and roll the ball up your back into the muscle at the side of your spine, press firmly. Do this slowly.
  5. Work your way up then down your back and then place ball to the other side of the spine and repeat.

Stress Relief Massage For Neck Tension

  1. Whilst sitting in a chair place hands on shoulders and squeeze. Keep this pressure and move your hands towards your neck.
  2. Now rest your elbows on a desk or table in front of you and drop your head slightly forward.
  3. In this position massage your neck from the bottom to the base of the head using small circles with your fingers along the muscles either side of your neck. Let the pressure be quite firm.
  4. Now place your hands behind your head and lace fingers together now drop your head allowing the weight of your elbows gently pull the neck muscles. This will help to stretch the muscles either side of your head and when you release your head they will relax.

Quick fix For Tension Headaches

Smooth the tips of your fingers across your forehead, starting from the middle and working your way out towards the temples.

Now place the flat of your palm across your forehead horizontally and with a firm but gentle pressure rub your hand up and down to the hairline. Continue until tension is relieved.

Easy Hand Massage

This is used by acupressure practitioners to help relieve stress.

  1. With your right hand massage the web of skin between your thumb and forefinger on your left hand. Press as close as you can to the joint where the two bones meet. Continue for about a minute.
  2. Do the same with the other hand.
