Stress busting foods...is there such a thing?

Well yes there is, certain foods contain nutrients which can help protect us from some of the harmful effects of stress.

Add a healthy well balanced diet and some healthy lifestyle changes and your body will be in far better shape to fight off any ill effects that stress can have on our health.

Here are some of the main stress busting mood foods which can help you live a happier more stress free lifestyle.

Dark Green Vegetables

B vitamins are essential for combating stress; they help to calm anxiety and also help prevent depression. All dark green vegetable contain high levels of these B Vitamins and so the old adage of eating up your greens still remains true today. This group of vegetables include:

  • Broccoli
  • Kale
  • Chard
  • Bok Choy
  • Asparagus 
  • Green beans

Spinach

Spinach is another green vegetable and so will also contain high levels of B Vitamins but it also contains a lot of magnesium. Magnesium helps to lower your stress by helping to keep you calm; it will also keep your energy levels up.

Tea (black/green/white)

Having a hot drink to help you stop what you are doing and relax should be part of everyone’s day. However coffee is full of caffeine which will actually do the opposite of relax you. Tea is a better option as it contains half of the caffeine of coffee and also contains flavonoids which is said to help calm and focus your mind.

Calming Carbohydrates

Ever wondered why stressed people turn to foods high in carbs for their daily snacks? Well it is actually because carbohydrates help the brain produce the chemical serotonin which is the body’s natural calm inducing chemical.

Unfortunately most carbs are also very calorific and will in the end cause you to gain weight if eaten in enough quantities. However there are much healthier carbohydrate rich foods which are lower in calories and better for you.

So instead of turning to sugar filled foods such as cake or crisps turn to foods such as:

  • Whole grain bread
  • Brown rice
  • Fresh popcorn
  • Brown pasta
  • Oatmeal

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are a great afternoon gap filler when you are in need of a snack. They are full of B Vitamins and magnesium as well as other important vitamins. They will also fill you up better and stop you reaching for something else.

However they are very calorific and so it is recommend that on a small handful are eaten daily.

Citrus Fruits

Vitamin C is another great stress busting nutrient, so any fruits high in this vitamin will also help you cope with your daily stresses.

Vitamin C is also involved in helping the body produce collagen which helps to keep your skin firm and looking young and stress free.

Avocados: Stress busting with some guacamole

This rather creamy fruit has many health benefits and because of its creamy texture is more satisfying to those who crave a creamy dessert rather than fresh fruit. It contains very high levels of potassium, in fact 4 bananas worth, which is why it is one of the best and quickest acting foods to help calm your nerves, especially in the morning.
