Aromatherapy for stress relief has been in use for many many years and lots of people use it on a daily basis to help relieve tension and promote well being.

Your sense of smell or your olfactory sense is directly linked to the area of your  brain which is responsible for the fight of flight response to stress. This means that by using certain relaxing scents to stimulate this area of your brain you can induce a sense of wellbeing and calm.

How does aromatherapy for stress relief work?

Here is a list of essential oils  which are good for stress relief and which you may want to try and experiment for yourself. The top three scents for promoting relaxation are Lavender, Citrus and Vanilla. But these are not the only ones and for some people may have other associations which could reduce the stress relieving affect. So experiment with others to see which work best for you.

Aromatherapy captures the beneficial properties of scented essential oils produced by special glands in the flowers, fruit, leaves and seeds of therapeutic plants.

Aromatherapy directly affects the sense of smell, which is connected to the limbic system of the brain, which is involved with regulating emotions.

There are a few ways in which you can use aromatherapy for stress relief, for instance you can:

  • Inhale it directly, perhaps on a handkerchief or on your pillow at night
  • Massage with it, mixing it with oils
  • Add to a bath
  • Heat it to allow the scent to flow into a room
